Unfit for work
Paper Sink (2021) is the first iteration of the Unfit for Work series, a project which involves making casts of objects from materials which can not withstand the original object’s function. The casts are then photographed and photoshopped to look as if the were floating against a bleak background. The floating objects stand as haunted memories, eerie, while their attachment to their environment has been purposefully erased. This act of erasure alludes to the way neo-liberalism and neo-colonialism actively erase the links between their violent policies and depression by pushing mental health as an individual’s responsibility through popular narratives such as #selfcare, amongst others.
In future iterations of the series, the objects to be cast will be chosen because they are loaded with notions of individualism, secrecy, shame and guilt, through arbitrary moral injunctions which were used to justify colonial violence and the alienation of people from the land.
